toddler and sign language and spanish?
Question by Ashley: toddler and sign language and spanish?
I have a 2 year old son who is learning to speak. I know a little bit of spanish and american sign language. Since his brain is like a sponge right now I would like to teach him all I know in english, spanish and american sign language. How do I go about it without it being overwhelming. Should I teach him all three at once. Such as for dog say “dog” “perro” and the sign for dog all together? When I say train I also do the sign and he’s already picked that up today, would it be too much to throw in the spanish word for train “tren”? thanks for any advice and strategies.

I think you could teach all 3 at the same time. Just work it into your everyday things that you already do, he’ll pick up on it pretty quickly. I would just do something like: “Do you see that pretty dog….dog and perro mean the same thing” while doing the sign.

Yes! You should do! I speak Spanish as Native language, & I always wanted to rise my child in a bilingual environment. When my son was 2 years old he presented speech delay & everyone told me it was because he was growing in a bilingual environment. I was very confused because most hispanic friends w/children did it w/them & they ended fully bilingual. But after months of speech therapies & medical evaluation we found out my son was autistic. So, his speech therapist started teaching him sign language & verbal English. I kept teaching him verbal Spanish & English. Now he’s 5 years old & he speaks English, Spanish & American Sign Language. Not bad at all for being an autistic child. If my child could do it even though he has a neurological problem, can you imagine what your child can achieve… There are a lot of songs that they teach both language, like “Mi Cuerpo hace musica”: teaches body parts in English & Spanish. My son loves to watch Diego & Dora, & Rosita from Sesame Street…
i can’t speak from experience, i can only say what i think. but i think trying to teach your son all three at the same time will be confusing. rather, i think i would mix it up and call it a dog one time, then perro the next time and work the sign language in with both. jmo…
